Pablo Pinillos converted an 89th-minute penalty as Racing Santander claimed an important 1-0 win over Getafe at the Coliseum Alfonso Perez.

Ivan Marcano was the guilty party for the hosts, fouling Giovani Dos Santos in the closing moments and earning a red card in the process.

Pinillos held his nerve to take the points and make it four games unbeaten for Santander as they look to break clear of Primera Division relegation worries in a congested bottom half.

Kennedy Bakircioglu had the first chance of the match for Santander, shooting right-footed from 12 yards but failing to beat Jordi Codina in the home goal.

That was the only chance of note in a scrappy opening 15 minutes, with Santander making their presence felt with a series of fouls in the middle of the park.

Adrian Colunga produced a dangerous corner after 22 minutes but Antonio Tono was able to punch clear for the visitors.

The hosts were struggling for fluency and Jose Manuel Mane saw his cross well cleared by Domingo Cisma after a rare break.

With 38 minutes on the clock Ariel Nahuelpan found room to shoot from the left of the area but Daniel Diaz was able to block his effort.

Five minutes into the second period, Bakircioglu worked Codina with a 20-yard free-kick, though the save was never really in doubt.

As the hour mark approached both sides looked to their bench for inspiration, with Getafe's Daniel Parejo and Adrian Sardinero summoned as well as Santander's Markus Rosenberg.

Rosenberg almost had a dramatic impact, lining up a shot from 25 yards and making Codina pull off the save.

That aside, the changes did not markedly improve the quality of the attacking play.

Indeed when Miku failed to put his header on target from a rare Getafe chance in the 83rd minute a stalemate looked almost certain.

Instead it was Dos Santos, another replacement, who changed things, drawing Marcano into the foul in the area.

Marcano was sent on his way with a straight red and Pinillos stepped up to convert from the penalty spot.

Dos Santos almost made it two in the final minute only for Tono to pull off a remarkable save from six yards.
