New York Red Bulls Confirm Signing Of Thierry Henry

Former Barcelona striker Thierry Henry will play for New York Red Bulls next season, the MLS club has announced via their official website.

Speculation had been rife that the France international forward would conclude his career in the USA for several months, with many reports linking him with a move to the Big Apple. Deprived of game-time while with Barcelona and with no extension to Henry’s contract, which was due to expire in 2011, on the horizon, the transfer has finally been completed.

Few details about the player’s contract have been revealed, but the Red Bulls have confirmed that the 32-year-old, who turns 33 in mid-August, has penned a “multi-year” deal.

Henry will officially be added to the roster of the MLS club as a designated player on July 15, when the international transfer window opens, and once his International Transfer Certificate has been cleared.

“It is without question that Thierry Henry is one of the most successful and recognisable soccer players over the past 15 years,” Dietmar Beiersdorfer, head of Red Bull Global Soccer, told the club’s official website. “We are thrilled that Thierry has decided to come to New York to help the Red Bulls compete for championships this year and for years to come. His international pedigree is second to none and he is a proven winner.”

Henry would also appear pleased to have completed the switch, indicating: “This marks an exciting new chapter in my career and life.

“It is an honour to play for the New York Red Bulls. I am fully aware of the team’s history and my sole goal during my time here is to help win the club its first championship. Knowing Red Bull’s significant commitment to soccer locally and internationally, I am confident that my teammates and I will succeed.”

Over the course of the last 16 years, Henry has turned out for Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal and Barca, becoming the Gunners’ all-time top scorer in the process. Additionally, his success on the international scene has seen him score more goals in international play than any other Frenchman, 51, in a career that has seen him claim both the World Cup and the European Championships.
