Cardiff will play Blackpool for the final place in next season’s Premier League after beating Leicester 4-3 on penalty kicks Wednesday night in the League Championship playoff.
Leicester won the second leg 3-2 in overtime, leaving the home-and-home semifinal tied with a 3-3 aggregate score.
Leading 1-0 from the first leg, Cardiff went further ahead on Michael Chopra’s 21st-minute goal. Leicester took a 3-1 lead in the game—and built 3-2 margin in the aggregate—on goals by Matt Fryatt and Andy King around an own-goal by Mark Hudson. But Peter Whittingham’s 69th-minute penalty kick for Cardiff tied the aggregate.
Cardiff and Blackpool play at Wembley Stadium on May 22. Newcastle and West Bromwich Albion earned the automatic promotion spots.
