MEXICO CITY (AP)—A second-division football player was killed in an apparent robbery attempt in Mexico City on Friday.
Guillermo Meza, a defender for Pumas Morelos, is the third football player to be shot in the Mexican capital this year in unrelated attacks. The other two players, including Paraguay star Salvador Cabanas, survived.
Meza, 21, was shot in the head while driving his car at dawn in a southern Mexico City neighborhood, the city state attorney general’s office said in a statement.
Pumas Morelos is an affiliate of Pumas, one of Mexico’s most popular teams. The club posted a message on its website offering condolences to Meza’s family and fans.
Cabanas, who was to have starred on Paraguay’s World Cup team, was shot in the head in a Mexico City bar on Jan. 25. The shooting left a bullet fragment lodged in his skull but the Club America player has been recovering.
A week later, Juan Carlos Silva, a midfielder for Aguilas, was wounded in an attempted robbery.
