Fergie: Roo is as big as Becks

ALEX FERGUSON claims Wayne Rooney is as big as Becks.

Fergie feels his red-hot Manchester United striker has developed the same world-class hero status as David Beckham.

Rooney, 24, is already an Old Trafford legend - just as Beckham was before he left United controversially in July 2003.

And tonight they will come face to face in the San Siro, as United take on AC Milan in their first-leg clash in the Champions League last 16.

United boss Ferguson said: "Manchester United build up heroes very quickly. Players like Rooney will be that kind of player. Rooney has been fantastic and he has developed that aura. The way people write about him, he must be God!

"Though he came from Everton, the fans will always see him as one of the players who has grown up with us.

"We are peculiar like that. The players, like Beckham, who come through the ranks are always viewed as better than those you buy."

Ferguson reckons that, as Beckham did at United, Rooney is now enjoying the best time of his career.

With 23 goals so far this season, he is into his most prolific scoring spell.

The Scot added: "His form has brought him to the high point of his career, without a doubt. That point he is at is encouraging.

"World class is a misused term. But with Rooney, you have to say he is getting to the point where he is now one of the best players in the world."

Ferguson is sure that his old boy Becks, even at 34, can still be a threat.

He said: "David has experience, 100-odd caps for England and has played for United, Milan and Real Madrid.

"It's the same experience as the likes of Nesta, Inzaghi and Seedorf. They all have that experience Milan bring."

Rooney will start up front on his own tonight, with a five-man midfield behind him.

Rio Ferdiand partners Jonny Evans in central defence, while Becks starts for Milan in his first game against United after a recent spell on the bench.
