Hamburg striker Mladen Petric has been ruled out until the new year after tests revealed he requires an ankle operation.
The Croatia international injured his ankle in Saturday's 3-1 win against Hertha Berlin and will go under the knife in Basle tomorrow.
Hamburg coach Bruno Labbadia, who has guided the club into a share of top spot in the Bundesliga, told the club's official website, www.hsv.de: "Naturally it is a bitter blow for us. I hope that Mladen will return as soon as possible."
He added: "We will have to come up with a solution to this problem over the coming weeks."
Petric joins defenders Alex Silva (torn cruciate knee ligaments), Bastian Reinhardt (metatarsal fracture), midfielder Collin Benjamin (knee) and striker Jose Paolo Guerrero (torn cruciate knee ligaments) on the long-term injury list.
