  • Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan defended himself on Tuesday (26th July) against criticism that he'd taken on a short coaching role with Australia at the start of their Sri Lankan tour.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Muttiah Muralitharan, former Sri Lanka bowler:

"My role is just to do consulting, consultation on spin bowling so when they asked me about this job three months ago when I said okay I will do it for only 10 days because I won't be able to stay with the dressing room when Sri Lanka is playing I think it's not ethically correct because people (are) very emotional in this country so they can (inaudible) so I will train first 10 days so I took the job for 10 days only, then the incidents came like you know they accused me without any evidence I cut the grass in the (inaudible) pitch for three-day game that's why the batsmen got out."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Muttiah Muralitharan, former Sri Lanka bowler:

"I think they will have not done what I've done for this country and what I've done for these people. So accusing me for these 10 days and false accusations putting around in the newspapers I think people will know what is the truth and people want to know my side of the story and also I was always a fair person and I never did anything wrong to anybody and I want to leave my life peacefully."
