  • Sao Paulo progress to the Copa Libertadores quarter-finals after a 5-3 aggregate victory over Toluca. The Brazilian club reached the next round of the competition despite a 3-1 round of 16 second leg defeat in Mexico.

Ecuador's Independiente Del Valle knocked out Argentine holders River Plate in the last 16 of the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday (4th May).

Uruguay's Nacional drew Corintians 2-2 on Wednesday, 4 May, to eliminate the Brazilian club on away goals and advance to the quarterfinals in the Copa Libertadores.

The Copa Libertardores round of 16 saw plenty of drama unfold and we get underway with the actioon in Mexico where Toluca welcomed 2005 winners Sao Paulo.

The Brazilian side triumphed 4-0 in the first leg but went a goal down when a quickly taken free kick surprised both the Toluca defense and the cameraman.
Fernando Uribe with the goal that the home side hoped would spark the miraculous comeback.

But that hope was crushed in the 50th minute when Sao Paulo levelled thanks to Michel Bastos.

Nevertheless the Mexicans poured forward and regained the lead 10 minutes later through Enrique Luis Triverio's header at the far post.

Uribe then tapped in for his second of the match in the 87th minute but it was too little too late as Sao Paulo progressed to the last eight, 5-3 on aggregate.

Meanwhile in Argentina, holders River Plate welcomed Ecuadorian side Independiente Del Valle needing to overcome a shock 2-0 deficit from the first leg.
And they nearly got their comeback underway with a wonderful move in the 14th minute, but Rodrigo Mora couldn't keep his effort down.

Jonathan Maidana was then denied by the bar in the second half.

River finally pulled one back through Lucas Alario 11 minutes from time but Independiente held on to secure an incredible upset and progress to the quarters.

Corinthians fans put on quite a show and delayed the start of their match agaisnt Uruguay's Nacional due to the smoke from their flares.

Following a 0-0 draw in Uruguay, it took less than five minutes for Nacional to silence the home fans as they got an away goal thanks to Nico Lopez.

With Corinthians now needing two to progress they equalised in timely fashion, Lucca slipping the ball past Estebad Conde to make it 1-1 just ten minutes later.

But Nacional dealt their opponents a hammer blow in the 57th minute when Santiago Romeo made it 2-1 with a scrappy effort.

Despite the procarious position, the home side was awarded two penalties late on, Andre missed the first while Marquinho Gabriel scored the second.

With less than two minutes remaining in stoppage time, Corinthians did have a final chance to win the match but Angel Romero.

It ended 2-2 meaning away goals were enough to Nacional to go through to the quarter-finals following a dramatic encounter.
