Egg-straordinary: Action from the Egg Throwing World Championships

A look at the World Egg Throwing and Egg Russian Roulette Championships, which took place in Lincolnshire, England on Sunday.

    Script:

The hamlet of Swaton in the south of Lincolnshire hosted a bizarre sporting egg-stravaganza on Sunday - the 2015 World Egg Throwing and Egg Russian Roulette Championships.

The day got underway with Egg Russian Roulette.

This cracking competition gets competitors taking turns to select one of six eggs placed in front of them and smash it against their foreheads.

The key is to avoid the one egg that has not been boiled, as failure to do so results in defeat and a face full of gooey raw egg.

After the hors-d'oeuvre came the main course - the Egg Throwing championships.

Teams of two - one tosser and one catcher - line up across from one another and attempt to throw a raw egg without breaking it.

Each successful pair advance to the next round, where the gap between the team-mates is increased.

This pattern continues until only one victorious pair remain.

Defending champion, Norman Fowler, says the key to success is the height of the throw.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Norman Fowler, 2014 Egg Russian Roulette champion:

    (on egg throwing)

"There are different techniques. You'll see underarm, you'll see the cricketers use a very strong overarm. The main thing is to get height, so that your catcher can run in. Getting that height is the hardest part."

Michael Speakman and Richard Gutsell eventually scrambled their way over the rest of the field and claimed victory.

They too believed their success, came from the toss.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Michael Speakman and Richard Gutsell, World Egg Throwing champions:

Speakman: "It was tough, to be honest. I think the eggs were better this year and we had a downward wind, so it helped an awful lot. But it was mainly down to him (points to Gutsell), 'cause if you can't throw it that far you can't catch it, so...."

Gutsell: "It's all in the tossing."

Speakman: "All in the tossing. It's good."
