A Mark Bridge goal secured Western Sydney Wanderers a 2-1 win on Saturday (18th April) and knocked Adelaide United out of the 'Race to the Plate' in the Australian A-League.

    Script:

Western Sydney Wanderers hosted Adelaide United in the penultimate round of matches in the A-League on Saturday.

Reds coach Josep Gombau needed a win to keep pace in the 'Race to the Plate' and the visitors showed more intent from the outset - in the 39th minute they almost took the lead through Bruce Djite's header, but Wanderers goalkeeper Ante Covic was up to the challenge.

Covic was beaten moments later however - a neat set of passes ended with Spanish player Sergio Cirio curling in a spectacular shot from the edge of the area.

Just after the hour mark Adelaide were reduced to 10 men after Nigel Boogard fouled Mark Bridge inside the area.

Australia international Toni Juric stepped up to take the penalty and scored with a low drive to make it 1-1.

The hosts then took the lead in the 73rd minute from another set piece.

Bridge was involved again, this time beating the offside trap to celebrate his 200th A-League appearance with a match-winning goal.

The win moves Western Sydney off the bottom of the table.

As for Adelaide United - they're now out of contention in the 'Race to the Plate'.
