Spanish top seed Garbine Muguruza trounced Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-2, 6-1 at the WTA Tournament of Champions in the Bulgarian capital, Sofia on Wednesday (29 October).

Match two on day two at the WTA Tournament of Champions saw Spain's Garbine Muguruza take on Ekaterina Makarova of Russia.

Makarova is number one seed for this event, but the Russian was outplayed by her Spanish rival on this occasion.

Muguruza cruised through the first set relatively untroubled, taking it 6-2.

She was then even more comfortable in the second, beating her opponent with ease, 6-1.

Makarova will aim to bounce back against Italian wild card Flavia Pennetta and Alize Cornet of France.

Seventh seed Muguruza smiled broadly as she made a hugely encouraging start to the tournament at the Armeets Arena in Bulgaria.
