Intro:
Rafael Nadal advanced to the second round of the Swiss Indoors on Monday (October 20th) with a straight sets win over Simone Bolelli.
Script:
World number three Rafael Nadal was in action at the Swiss Indoors in Basel on Monday, despite the fact that he is suffering from appendicitis.
The Spaniard has opted to treat the condition with antibiotics rather than undergo surgery to remove his appendix.
Nadal faced Simone Bolelli and although he later said he had been feeling the effects of his condition, the second seed made light work of the Italian.
Bolelli was beaten for a fourth time in as many meetings with Nadal, losing the first round match 6-2, 6-2.
Next up for Nadal is meeting with qualifier Pierre-Hugues Herbert, who overcame fellow Frenchman Edouard Roger-Vasselin in three sets.
Number seven seed David Goffin also progressed on Monday.
The Belgian beat Austria's Dominic Thiem 7-6(4), 6-3 to set up a second round encounter with either Ivan Dodig or Marco Chiudinelli.
SOUNDBITE: (English) Rafael Nadal (on the current state of his health):
"Well, as usual, when you are in that process or all the antibiotics that I take, the appendix is not 100 per cent perfect yet, so I feel more tired on court, I feel like.... I need time to recover after a point. So.... that's normal and probably it will be difficult to make that improve for this tournament, but I'm in the second round. That's very good news for me and important victory, probably going to give me some confidence and I'm going to try my best in the next one."
