The Asian Champions League saw defending champions Guangzhou Evergrande host Western Sydney Wanderers at Tianhe Stadium in the return leg of the quarter finals.
The Australian side went into the game with a 1-0 lead from the first leg, while the hosts were without several key players due to suspension.
Marcello Lippi too was suspended and was forced to watch the match from the stands.
Guangzhou had the chance to start the match in perfect fashion when they were awarded a penalty for a foul Elkeson.
The striker himself stepped up to take the spot kick but had his effort saved by Ante Covic.
The second half saw another penalty awarded, this time to the visitors when Mark Bridge was brought down in the box by Zeng Cheng.
Tomi Juric tucked it away to give the A-League side a 2-0 lead and a crucial away goal with just over half an hour to go.
Lippi's side reacted quickly however, just two minutes passed when Alberto Gilardino nodded down for Alessandro Diamanti who powered home for the equaliser.
Guangzhou pushed in search of the two goals they needed and Elkeson poked home to make it 2-1 in stoppage but it was too little too late.
The Wanderers go through on away goals and become the first Australian team to make it through to the semi-finals since Adelaide United in 2008.
They will face FC Seoul in the last four of Asian Champions League.
