Shakhtar lift Ukrainian Supercup

  • Intro:

Shakhtar Donetsk - minus a host of foreign stars who refused to return to the war-ravaged country - lifted the Ukraine Super Cup on Tuesday (22nd July) after a 2-0 win over Dynamo Kiev.

    Script:

No Douglas Costa - along with fellow-Brazilians Alex Teixeira, Ismaily, Fred and Dentinho and Argentine striker Facundo Ferreyra - but Shakhtar Donetsk were still too strong for Dynamo Kiev on Tuesday in the Ukranian Supercup.

The five South Americans refused to leave France for Ukraine due to concerns over their safety.

Other members of the foreign contingent did feature in the Lviv Stadium - but it was home-grown talent in the form of Oleksandr Gladkiy who proved most dangerous.

He went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first-half - and eventually did just that in the 74th minute although he appeared to foul the Dynamo Kiev defender in the process.

As Dynamo Kiev went pressing for the equaliser, they were caught again in injury time, Brazilian substitute Marlos securing victory.

2-0 the final score - and a first piece of silverware for Shakhtar this season.

However, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Donetsk club as unrest continues in the Ukraine.
