The sacking of Moyes follows a terrible season for the club, which sees them lying 7th in the Premier League table, following defeat at Everton on Sunday.

Manchester United thanked the Scot for the hardwork, honesty and integrity he brought to the role.

Moyes has faced fierce critisicm this season from both the media and supporters alike, and leaves just 10 months into a six year contract.

In the short term player-coach Ryan Giggs is expected to take charge of United's next game at home against Norwich on Saturday.

Bookmakers have been quick to install current Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal as favourite to succeed Moyes in the Old Trafford hotseat.

Van Gaal had previously been strongly linked to Tottenham and is available after Holland's World Cup campaign.

Other manager in the frame include Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp and Diego Simeone, whose Atletico Madrid side top La Liga.
