Simon out of Monte Carlo Masters

Wednesday, April 16 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

There was plenty of drama on the second day at the Monte Carlo Masters with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Andreas Seppi and Teymuraz Gabashvili all winning.

    Script:

Gilles Simon was the favourite to set-up a second round meeting with Rafael Nadal at the Monte Carlo Masters, but he was never going to have it all his own way against Russian Teymuraz Gabashvili.

World number 28 Simon took the opening set but Gabashvili took the second before setting himself up with the chance to serve out the match.

Simon fought hard, but couldn't prevent the Russian from moving through.

Gabashvili might find eight-time champion Nadal too much in the next round, but he looked delighted to move through.

There was another upset involving a Russian on day two in Monte Carlo, however this time it was a Russian on the receiving end.

Mikhail Youzhny, the 13th seed, was up against Italy's Andreas Seppi in a match that produced what might end up being the shot of the tournament.

Seppi firing an audacious and spectacular forehand between his legs against all the odds to the delight of the crowd.

That point seemed to inspire the Italian, who went on to take the opener 6-3, before sealing his victory in a second set tie-break.

Home favourite and ninth seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is also through after surviving a second set scare to reach the third round of the tournament, having enjoyed a first round bye.

Philipp Kohlschreiber took the French number one to three sets, with Tsonga moving through after just under two hours on court.
