According to a report, Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney was once given a dressing down by his club because of the antics of a lookalike of England's record goalscorer

Wayne Rooney got a rollicking from Manchester United bosses over the randy antics of a lookalike.

The striker was called into the office for a telling off after club chiefs half-killed themselves trying to bury a kiss’n’tell story a woman had tried to flog to newspapers. They told Rooney, 36, they would really appreciate it if in future he'd stop heading out on the town with fellow England footballer Theo Walcott, 33, to 'try to s*** anyone and everyone he could'.

The bemused star denied all knowledge, said it was not him and he definitely hadn't been out with Walcott 'as the pair weren't really that close’.

According to celebrity news website Popbitch: "This back and forth continued for a little while until the bosses came to realise that Rooney genuinely didn't appear to have any clue what they were talking about. So what had happened?

"Two lads who just so happened to look a bit like Rooney and Walcott had been teaming up and touring the downmarket clubs of Liverpool together as one another's wingman in the hopes that someone would mistake them for the famous footballers.

"And they obviously looked convincing enough at chucking out time to end up causing untold PR panic at Old Trafford.’’

Rooney, who now manages Championship club Derby County, had not responded to a request for comment on Friday.

Rooney continues to fight for Derby County's survival

He has since emerged as the favourite for the Burnley job following Friday's sacking of Sean Dyche, according to William Hill.

William Hill spokesperson, Tony Kenny, said: “He’s done a fine job at Burnley but Sean Dyche’s time at Turf Moor has come to an end with the Clarets in deep relegation trouble.

"Many have been impressed by the job Wayne Rooney has done at Derby and he’s the 2/1 favourite to take over ahead of Chris Wilder at 9/4 and Michael Duff at 11/2.”

But Burnley could have a tough task on their hands to get the Liverpudlian to Turf Moor, given he previously rejected an approach by boyhood club Everton earlier this season.

Instead, he has continued to fight for Derby County's survival despite a horrific points deduction.
