Manchester United have sounded out Mauricio Pochettino about becoming the club's next manager.

Senior United figures are believed to have spoken to Pochettino this week about him replacing interim boss Ralf Rangnick at Old Trafford. The approach comes after Ajax boss Erik ten Hag was interviewed by United last week, as part of the ongoing process to appoint a new permanent manager this summer.

United CEO Richard Arnold is keen to keep his options open as he scours the market for the right man to lead the club back to the top of the game. Former Tottenham boss Pochettino has long been a favourite of some members of the United board, including former manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Argentine is facing the sack from Paris Saint-Germain this summer following their Champions League exit to Real Madrid in the last 16 and knows he is on borrowed time in the French capital. United would be prepared to wait until the end of the season to appoint Pochettino if he becomes the club's No.1 choice - and would not have to shell out compensation to the French giants.

Pochettino, who led Spurs to the Champions League final in 2019, has let it be known he is keen to manage United. United have stepped up their search for a new permanent boss to take over from Rangnick, who will move into a consultancy role at Old Trafford this summer.

United also intend on speaking to Spain boss Luis Enrique, although he will not be available until after this winter's World Cup, which will count against him. Arnold's preferred choice was Thomas Tuchel, but the German has made it clear to United that he has no intention of leaving Chelsea this summer.

Arnold wants to have someone in place at the start of June so the new boss can finalise his transfer targets and start planning his summer's pre-season preparations, which include a game against bitter rivals Liverpool in Bangkok the following month.
