Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been out of work since being sacked by Manchester United in November and former Sky Sports pundit Charlie Nicolas has urged Aberdeen to make the Norwegian an offer

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been tipped to make a sensational return to management with Aberdeen just three months after being sacked by Manchester United.

The Scottish Premiership side are currently searching for a new manager after firing Stephen Glass following their Scottish Cup defeat to Motherwell on Saturday, and former Aberdeen and Arsenal forward Charlie Nicolas says a move for Solskjaer would "show ambition".

"If Aberdeen really want to make a statement they should go and make an attempt to speak to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer," Nicolas told the Daily Express.

"I was thinking about managerial options for my old club and I would love them to go out and make a real statement of intent.

"Why not go and ask the former Manchester United manager if he is interested? He can only say no, but if you don't ask you don't get," Nicolas added.

"People might say he has just managed one of the biggest clubs in the world, why would he even consider Aberdeen?

"I know and I get that but if you look at Solskjaer's CV away from United it has been at the likes of Molde and Cardiff. They are clubs who are of similar size and potential to Aberdeen.

"Why not show some ambition?"

Solskjaer was sacked by United following a dismal 4-1 defeat to Watford which left the club seventh in the table back in November.

A number of Premier League vacancies have opened up in the months since, though Solskjaer's name was rarely linked, despite previously promising to return to football after a short break.

Nicolas meanwhile worked for years as a pundit on Sky Sports' Gillette Soccer Saturday programme, but was controversially sacked in 2020, along with fellow regulars Matt Le Tissier and Phil Thompson, as the company looked to change what it perceived to be its stale image.
