Fans think Cristiano Ronaldo "spits on" Man Utd teammate in viral footage

In viral footage, it looked as though Cristiano Ronaldo had gobbed on teammate Anthony Elanga during Manchester United's woeful 1-1 draw with Southampton - but the reason is more likely to be the camera angle

Footage of Cristiano Ronaldo appearing to spit in the direction of Anthony Elanga has sent social media into meltdown.

After Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Southampton on Saturday, a viral clip did the rounds showing the superstar appearing to gob on the back of his teammate.

The more likely explanation is that camera angle deceived viewers.

There's a chance that Ronaldo spat behind the Swedish teenager and it just looked as though it hit him.

But that didn't stop thousands reacting to the footage.

One wrote: “At least he had one shot on target.”

Another said: “Anthony Elanga get that head of yours washed immediately.”

Another responded: “I saw this during the game and thought I imagined it but wtf.”

United dropped two points at Old Trafford after a breathless performance from Southampton.

The game finished in a 1-1 draw and Ralf Rangnick told players that they must learn to be headstrong and “get nasty” after they left the field to a chorus of boos.

Che Adams cancelled out Jadon Sancho's first-half opener as Ralph Hasenhuttl's side came away with a point, hampering Untied's chances of Champions League qualification.

Paul Scholes said after the Premier League encounter that players were not willing to run for the German boss - and though Rangnick dismissed such claims, he did say the players must learn how to get mean.

He said: “The question isn't about how much we run.

“It is about how we can get more compact, more aggressive - and even more nasty [sic] when we are defending a lead.

“I know what Paul Scholes said - and I don't think the players are unwilling to run.

“But it's about the type of players we have and how they want to play.

“Our team has never been a pressing team and to change those habits in a couple of weeks without a pre-season doesn't happen like that.

“But no one should believe that the players don't care or like to experience things like today.”

United are sat fifth in the table, level on points with West Ham (40) but with a worse goal difference.
