Lampard closing in on Everton job: He is set to have second interview

Frank Lampard appears in pole position to be appointed as Everton's next manager.

The 43-year-old has been out of work since being sacked from Chelsea just over a year ago, but he is understood to be meeting the Toffees hierarchy again this Thursday, January 27.

Lampard had his first interview at Goodison Park last week and is believed to be keen on a return to management.

Vitor Pereira's interview

This latest news - reported by the Telegraph - comes after an extraordinary interview given by Vitor Pereira, the other candidate in the running for the role.

Pereira delivered a remarkable monologue on Sky Sports News in which he tried to dispel any bad feeling from the Everton fans towards him, which had been visible on graffiti daubed outside the ground reading 'Pereira Out, Lampard In'.

But it seems to have the opposite and has not gone down well with the club either.

"I understand the feeling of the supporters because in the last years the club did not get good results and it is normal that they are not happy," said Pereira.

"But I came here with spirit and intention to bring again good football and the spirit of the supporters. This is my target.

"I remember Goodison Park as a fortress and that is what appeals to me."

Asked whether he would be prepared to withdraw his application after the furore he has provoked, Pereira countered.

"I did my work as a professional and now it's the club's decision," he replied.

"I came for a meeting. I did my work. And now the decision is not controlled by me.

"I think they were enthusiastic about what I proposed to them. We need to give confidence to the team. I felt in the meeting they were very positive.

"They have other candidates and this is the time for decisions. We wait for the decision.

"I will move forward with my life and if they want me they must call me. That's all."
