Manchester United will make an improved approach to Zinedine Zidane in the wake of Saturday's humiliating 4-1 defeat at Watford, according to reports. After his tumbling tenure hit a new low at Vicarage Road, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to be sacked as manager.

United have lost five of their last seven Premier League games, and the collapse against Watford was arguably the most damning of the lot.

The Times reported that the board had called an emergency meeting to discuss Solskjaer's position in the aftermath.

The Norwegian boss' compensation terms were on the agenda of a virtual discussion that commenced at 7pm.

It's claimed that the board have decided to sack Solskjaer, with the club legend expected to part in the next 48 hours.

And United have settled on their priority replacement already as they look to rebuild for the future.

Man Utd are set to push for Zinedine Zidane.

According to reputable journalist Tancredi Palmeri, the Red Devils will make a new attempt to lure Zidane to Old Trafford.

The French football icon currently has reservations over moving to the Premier League midway through the season.

He has reportedly already told United that he doesn't think it's the right time to arrive in the Premier League.

Zidane wants to take a break until next summer, while his wife is also unsure about switching Madrid for Manchester.

Palmeri's report backs up a snippet of The Times', which claimed the Glazers have their sights set on the 49-year-old.

Despite his reluctance, United's owners have told club officials to intensify attempts to secure Zidane's services.

The club is ready to increase Zidane's financial package if he were to succeed Solskjaer in the hot seat.

It's a factor that could be enough to tempt him to cut his break short and take on the biggest challenge of his coaching career so far.

Zidane has been out of work since leaving his post as Real Madrid manager earlier this year.

The Madrid legend is considering a return to management soon but is said to have his heart set on taking charge of his country.

Didier Deschamps is currently in the France hotseat, though his contract comes to end at the end of the 2022 World Cup.

If Zidane cannot be lured, United will have to consider a temporary appointment. They have a number of options who could come in on an interim basis, with Darren Fletcher and Ralf Rangnick both heavily mentioned.
