Jesse Lingard has revealed that he was devastated upon discovering he wasn't part of England's Euro 2020 squad, but supported them in a pub with fans while attempting to DJ
Jesse Lingard went from being a Manchester United outcast to becoming a West Ham sensation last season, as his miraculous career revival helped the Hammers qualify for the Europa League during his spell on loan at the club.
The English midfielder netted nine goals in 16 Premier League appearances during the second half of the season for West Ham last campaign, and his performances put him in contention for England's Euro 2020 squad against the odds.
Unfortunately for Lingard, he didn't make Gareth Southgate's 26-man squad despite being included in England's final warm-up games before the competition began, and the United midfielder has opened up about his tearful reaction to the news.
But Lingard has also revealed how he turned the negative outcome into a positive experience, as he visited a pub and even got onto the DJ decks as England beat Croatia 1-0 in the tournament opener.
Jesse Lingard watched England in a pub after missing out on playing
Lingard revealed all in a column with The Players Tribune, and opened up about his summer experience after missing out on Southgate's Euro 2020 squad: "Back in June, I really thought I had done enough to get into the final 26 for the Euros. Obviously, I respected Gareth’s decision, but when I rang to tell my brother, well ... I cried. Lou cried as well.
"Two years ago, that news would have crushed me completely, thankfully, I’m in a better place these days.
Jesse Lingard made the most of his summer off following a revival season at West Ham
"When the boys played the opener, I wasn’t going to sit around and mope. I might not have been playing, but I was still a fan, right?
"So I pulled on a shirt — I’m close to Dec, so it had to be RICE 4 on the back — and I went to a pub with Lou and some friends.
"You gotta love the pub when England are playing — the atmosphere, the energy. I took some pics, signed some autographs. I’m not really sure how it happened, but soon I was on the DJ decks! What an afternoon that was.
"I’ll say this to every player: Join the fans in a pub at least once during your career. It just gives you a different perspective."
