Arsenal outcast Lucas Torreira has lifted the lid on his decision to join Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal this summer.

Torreira returned to the Emirates at the end of last season after a loan spell with Atletico Madrid, who were not interested in bringing him back to Spain this term.

And having been deemed surplus to requirements by Mikel Arteta in north London, the Uruguay midfielder set his sights on a move away from the Gunners in the summer transfer window.

Fortunately he managed to secure that desired transfer just under a week before the market closed, joining Fiorentina on another loan deal in 2021/22.

When speaking about his latest Arsenal exit, Torreira revealed that he was desperate to head back to Italy three years after leaving Sampdoria to head to England.

“I wanted to go back to Italy, where I felt good," the 25-year-old said, via Calcio Mercato.

“For me the most important thing is to play. It’s true that we have been talking about Fiorentina for many years, I want to make the most of this experience now that I’m here.”

Torreira has made 89 appearances for Arsenal since completing his £24million switch from Sampdoria in 2018, scoring four goals.

He played a part in their 2019/20 FA Cup triumph, while also helping them reach the Europa League final the year before.

His loan stint at Atletico didn't go to plan, nevertheless, as despite making 26 appearances Diego Simeone often left him on the bench at the Wanda Metropolitano.

And following the signings of Albert Sambi Lokonga and Martin Odegaard this summer, there appears to be no way back for Torreira at Arsenal for as long as Arteta remains in charge.
