Man Utd could launch fresh Kieran Trippier bid as Diogo Dalot 'deal agreed with Dortmund'

Could Man Utd move for Kieran Trippier if Diogo Dalot leaves?

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid’s Kieran Trippier as Red Devils right-back Diogo Dalot is reportedly set for a move to Borussia Dortmund.

United have been chasing the England defender all summer in an attempt to provide Aaron Wan-Bissaka some competition.

Trippier left Tottenham to join Atletico in the summer of 2019 and became a La Liga title winner last term.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move to Old Trafford but one is yet to materialise. United might have to shift players from their wage bill to complete any more deals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sensational return to the club is part of a big-spending transfer window as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer attempts to topple rivals Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton have also arrived in combined £108m deals.

But a squad place could be freed if Dalot completes his rumoured move to Dortmund. United have agreed to a season-long loan with an obligation to buy which will see the Portugal star head to the Bundesliga, according to Sky Germany.

Dortmund were reportedly also interested in signing Trippier but their move for Dalot could now pave the way for United to complete a transfer instead.

Dalot joined United in the summer of 2018 but has only made 35 appearances.

The 22-year-old has spent last season on loan at AC Milan and helped the Italian side finish as runners-up in Serie A.

He has struggled to break into the United team ahead of £50m full-back Wan-Bissaka. In August, Dalot warned Solskjaer that he needed more game time.

“When I had a season like last season obviously the things start to get more demanding as well,” he told the Mirror.

“I want to keep playing, I want to keep giving everything I have and improve. I know last season was fantastic but I can do even more.”

Ronaldo’s comeback on Friday has completed an incredible transfer window for United.

The legendary forward joins Sancho and Varane in being the club’s major arrivals this summer.

Varane is yet to make his debut for the club following his £35m move from Real Madrid and Solskjaer would not be drawn on answering when the Frenchman would appear.

“He is working really hard. When I asked him if he was ready to play, we had a behind closed doors against Burnley and he felt, no I need to suffer on the training field first,” Solskjaer told reporters on Friday.

“He needs to work because you know he had his holidays, he came in, said his goodbyes at Real Madrid, then he didn’t train with them, then he was waiting for his visa, then he came here, had his isolation.

“We found him a little garden, a house with a garden, he wasn’t ready to play but now he’s had a good couple weeks of training and he’s looking ever as impressive.

“As a person, as a player, he’s got class. He will fit in at Man United, definitely. I think we’ve signed a top person and a player at the right time.

“A new challenge for him after being a World Cup winner, Champions League winner with Real Madrid so many times, he probably needed a challenge and hopefully we can challenge him to take the next step.”
