Liverpool tipped to win Erling Haaland transfer race due to rivals' 'financial problems'

Erling Haaland has been one of the most talked about names during this summer's transfer window.

Liverpool have been tipped by former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich legend Michael Rummenigge to win the race for Norwegian sensation Erling Haaland. Europe’s heavyweights are expected to form an orderly queue when Haaland’s reported £68million release clause becomes active next summer.

Dortmund’s 21-year-old has made a barnstorming start to the new season, rattling in five goals in just his first two games.

Naturally, speculation is rife when it comes to a striker of his calibre, although it looks as though he is destined to spend the next 12 months in Germany.

Where he goes afterwards remains a topic of intense debate, although Rummenigge, who made more than 300 combined league appearances for Dortmund and Bayern, had his own say.

"Real and Barca have financial problems so I could imagine him moving to England. His father used to play there too. I could well imagine Liverpool for Haaland.”

Indeed, Madrid have often been touted as the favourites to sign Haaland, but it remains to be seen what effect a probable swoop for Kylian Mbappe would have on that pursuit.

Barcelona are effectively out of the race due to their financial woes, with Lionel Messi recently forced out of the club in dramatic fashion.

Manchester City are heavily linked with Harry Kane, which would effectively take them out of the hunt, while Chelsea have only just spent big on Romelu Lukaku.

All things considered, the way could be cleared for a ferocious tug of war between Liverpool and Manchester United, who should both be looking to secure long-term options in attack next summer.

Both fanbases would be wildly excited by the prospect, and Rummenigge’s comments explain why: “Haaland is an exceptional phenomenon. Players like that only come along every 30 or 40 years.

"I don’t know what his career plans are, but for Dortmund it’s great that he’s still wearing the black and yellow jersey this season.

"He is an absolute goal machine, his opponents fly away to the right and left when he starts running. I’ve never seen anything like him at that age.

"The only drawback with a player of his size is his headers. He doesn’t score enough goals with his head. Otherwise, Haaland is a perfect player."

Another prolific season for the Norwegian would only escalate the excitement and tension in the race to secure his signature.

Based on his rampant early-season performances, his goal-scoring exploits are not due to slow down any time soon.
