Football fans being sold 'out-of-date alcohol' for £2 inside ground sparks huge debate

Football fans have been divided in opinion by the sale of out-of-date alcohol that was met by Millwall supporters who travelled to Gillingham for a pre-season friendly this week

Football supporters have argued whether the sale of out-of-date alcohol for a discount should be avoided or welcomed following Millwall's trip to Gillingham for a pre-season friendly.

One fan who travelled to watch the away side in action took a snap of a sign next to the bar at the Priestfield Stadium - and it read: "OUT OF DATE ALCOHOL. DISCOUNTED PRICE £2.00."

While there might well have been a backlog of booze building up at Gillingham following the absence of match-going spectators, many think the actions were not advisable.

Others praised the club for trying to make back some money on the alcohol, insisting that they wouldn't mind paying the reduced price for a beer before or after a fixture.

One wrote on Twitter: "Mate I wouldn’t think twice, just hand a tenner over."

With a second adding: "Take my money."

A third agreed: "Absolutely ne bother with that like."

And a fourth concluding: "Beer for 2 quid at the football though is a bargain, even if it is out of date."

One of those who disagreed said: "The audacity to still charge two quid."

With a second saying: "F****** awful this was must be illegal."

A third asked: "Is this even legal?"

With a fourth saying: "I still wouldn't buy it!"

Many football fans enjoy drinking pints before and after fixtures

Around 2,000 fans we in attendance ahead of the new League One campaign, with around 700 coming up to support the away side ahead of their Championship bow next weekend.

On the pitch, Kyle Dempsey scored in the 13th minute to give the home side the lead before Millwall's Jake Cooper sealed a draw with just four minutes to play.

Lions boss Gary Rowett said ahead of their final friendly against Ipswich on Saturday: “We’ve got another game in the week that we’ve organised just to get some match minutes and I think a lot of the players might need that.”
