Barcelona know that turning what has largely been a promising summer into a successful one rests on significantly reducing their wage bill, which means finalising the sale of Antoine Griezmann.

The French forward has failed to live up to expectations since arriving at the Camp Nou in the summer of 2019, and Barcelona have made no secret of their desire to part ways with him during this transfer window.

Griezmann has attracted interest from Paris Saint-Germain, as well as a host of top clubs in England, but it has emerged that he only has eyes on one destination.

As the Barcelona-based newspaper Sport have reported, Griezmann has told Barcelona that he would only be willing to leave the Camp Nou if it meant returning to Atletico Madrid.

However, Barcelona have struggled to find an agreement with Los Rojiblancos in recent days over a swap deal involving Griezmann and Saul Niguez.

Nevertheless, as the article in Sport goes on to add, Atletico Madrid are still looking to bring in the 30-year-old this summer.

Atletico want Griezmann to return

Diego Simeone is determined to sign a forward to take some of the goalscoring load off of Luis Suarez, and he would relish the opportunity with Griezmann once more after their successful spell together between 2014 and 2019.

With Griezmann holding out for a move to Atletico Madrid, Simeone will be hoping that he gets his man this summer.

Meanwhile, Barcelona are considering contingency plans, should the move end up not materialising this summer.

These plans involve guaranteeing the salary reduction of a host of key first-team players, whilst also finalising the departure of several others in the first team.

Griezmann is currently the second-highest earner at Barcelona, only behind Lionel Messi, who the club reportedly have an agreement with over a new contract but have been unable to announce the renewal due to their issues with LaLiga's salary cap.
