Rafa Benitez has agreed a three-year deal to become Everton boss.

The Spaniard could be confirmed on Wednesday as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement.

Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri has pushed ahead with the appointment despite anger from some fans about bringing in the former Liverpool boss.

The 61-year-old's appointment will be hugely controversial as he managed their bitter rivals across Stanley Park from 2004 and 2010.

Benitez also once called Everton a “small club” during his time in charge at Anfield.

It has certainly caused debate between Everton supporters while Merseyside Police were forced to investigate after a banner warning Benitez "Don't sign" was left near his family home on the outskirts of the city.

The former Chelsea, Newcastle and Real Madrid manager will have to win over Toffees fans with results if he gets the job.

Benitez brings an impressive CV having won two La Liga titles with Valencia before winning the Champions League and FA Cup at Liverpool.

He also won the Europa League during an interim spell at Chelsea and helped Newcastle to promotion to the Premier League in 2017.

Benitez has been unemployed since leaving Chinese club Dalian Pro in January.

The Spaniard has had four rounds of talks with Iranian billionaire Moshiri and has won him over after Nuno Espirito Santo looked set to land the job earlier this month.

Benitez’s ally Paco de Miguel will also join the club as fitness coach.

The former Liverpool boss has kept a home on Merseyside since he was in charge of the Reds and has always been keen on a permanent return to the area.

The ex-Newcastle boss will be tasked with getting Everton into the Champions League.

The Toffees finished 10th last season after a disappointing end to the campaign before Ancelotti opted to return to Real Madrid.
