Liverpool have been urged to sign Lille's Renato Sanches - after an impressive showing at Euro 2020 - by Jose Enrique, who believes he is an ideal replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum.

Sanches has experienced a career renaissance in the North of France, after a stint at Bayern Munich - and a largely forgettable spell in Wales - threatened to kill his potential.

The Lille star has sat at the base of the Portuguese midfield at Euro 2020, as Fernando Santos' men moved onto the knockout stages.

And Jose Enrique has urged his former side to move for the midfield, three years after he rejected Manchester United.

"He has always been a great player. If I’m not wrong, he was named the best player in an Under-21 tournament," he said on his Instagram account.

"Like many young players, he had everything too quick. It took him a few years to settle. He looks the type of player, Klopp can help him become a world-class player.

"This is the man I want to replace Gini. He steps up on the big stage. Still only 23 & he just won the league with Lille.

"This man is an absolute engine & knows how to dictate a midfield like Gini did. He’s physically a level above others, he seems like a perfect fit for [Jurgen] Klopp."

Sanches was on United's radar in 2017, before he made the move to Bavaria.

However, he admitted as soon as he heard of Bayern's interest, there was only one choice: "They really put in a lot of effort and I immediately got a feeling the people in charge believed in me as a player.

"That was the decisive factor behind my decision to join Bayern.

"But I am also playing alongside a lot of world-class players here. I can learn from all of them, especially from the players who play in midfield like Arturo Vidal, Xabi Alonso and Thiago Alcantara."

Interestingly, the last name on that list, Thiago, now plies his trade on Merseyside.

Earlier this year Fabrizio Romano admitted that he believes Sanches would be an ideal signing for Liverpool.
