Aston Villa defender Matt Targett pulled out all the stops when proposing to his girlfriend at the end of last month.

Targett, 25, enjoyed a superb 2020/21 campaign with Villa, featuring in all 38 of their Premier League outings and helping Dean Smith's men to a respectable 11th-place finish.

And just over a week ago the left-back capped what has been a terrific year by proposing to girlfriend Jasmin Buckle in extremely romantic settings.

To pop the question Targett hired out a room at London's Shangri-La Hotel, which is located in The Shard, and acquired giant LED lights that read: "MARRY ME?"

He uploaded a photo of the special moment on Instagram and wrote: It’s a forever thing *love-struck emojis* can’t wait to marry you! I love you with all my heart".

Villa assistant manager John Terry was one of many who wished Targett well in the comments section, writing: "congratulations mate".

Team-mates Jack Grealish and Matty Cash simply opted for two love-struck emojis after seeing their Villa pal get engaged.

Buckle also shared photos of the proposal on Instagram and wrote: "Celebrating 8 years together, committing to a lifetime.

"Thank you for making all my dreams come true, not just today, but everyday.

"It’s a forever thing babyyyy".

Targett joined Villa in a £14million move from Southampton back in 2019 and has hit the ground running in the West Midlands.

He particularly impressed in the previous season, with his team-mates showing their appreciation by voting him players' player of the year.

“We knew the talent that people like Matt Targett had when we brought them in," Villa boss Smith recently said.

"We wanted him to make him more robust, more endurance-based and he’s certainly become that type of player.

“I think players’ player of the year is one of the best awards you can win because it’s from the people in that dressing room. He has consistently got better and better.

“There is loads more to come from him, there is a lot more he can improve, especially around that endurance but technically he’s a really top player.”
