Real Madrid's summer plans: Trimming the squad and just one big signing

Paco Gonzalez has explained the plans on Spanish radio

Carlo Ancelotti's return to Real Madrid came out of the blue. The former Everton boss looked settled in his role at Goodison Park, but Zinedine Zidane's latest exit saw him presented with an offer he couldn't refuse.

The Italian might not be the only big name to arrive at Valdebebas this summer, but the club's priority for now is offloading some of the squad's more peripheral players.

"Real Madrid have 33 first-team players right now," Paco Gonzalez, the director of 'Tiempo de Juego' explained on Cadena Cope's 'El Partidazo'.

"There aren't any offers for any of them, not even [Eden] Hazard.

"Buying a great player and not selling anyone would leave a lot of debt for the club. The plan is to keep [Luka] Jovic out on loan and playing, but not to sell him.

"Players like Brahim [Diaz] and [Take] Kubo won't have problems finding clubs. [Martin] Odegaard could be loaned again, and Roma want Borja Mayoral but they don't have the 15 million euros he would cost.

"The big problem this summer is that only the state-run clubs have money. [Dani] Ceballos has said that he doesn't want another loan. He's talking to Real Betis, but they have no money."

Just one big arrival

Kylian Mbappe is just one of the names that has been linked with Real Madrid ahead of this year's transfer market, but it won't be easy for the club to make a big signing.

"If Real Madrid sign it'll be because they'll have sold a lot before August," Gonzalez said.

"It would just be one big signing. No centre-back will sign to cover for Sergio Ramos, nor will another player arrive in midfield.

"Mbappe and [Erling] Haaland cannot join at the same time. Real Madrid haven't contacted PSG to ask for a price or a player exchange, something that is ruled out. Real Madrid would pay 200m euros if PSG wanted that."

Real Madrid's departures

Sergio Ramos isn't expected to be the only significant departure this summer, with his central defensive partner and one other joining him.

"Real Madrid expect three of their 33 to go soon," Gonzalez said.

"Sergio Ramos isn't going to renew, [Raphael] Varane can leave if an offer of 35m euros to 40m euros euros comes in.

"Isco is looking for a new team. They don't expect Marcelo to move because of the way he is, even if he won't play much. Then, nothing has been said to the club about [Gareth] Bale.

"Antonio Blanco, Miguel Gutierrez and Marvin Park will stay with Castilla, and Ancelotti will call them to the first team when needed."
