Raul Jimenez nears return after head injury: I thought he was dead

Wolves striker Raul Jimenez suffered a horrific head injury in November last year which could have been career or even life-threatening, but the Mexican is now back in training and could be near a return to action.

In the moments that followed the accidental clash with Arsenal's David Luiz last November, Jimenez's partner, Daniela Basso, feared the worst as he lay on the pitch.

"Unfortunately, my first thought was that he had died," Basso told the New York Times.

"I didn't see him react on the screen, normally when players fall and get hurt, you see a reaction, that's when you know if they're pretending or not.

"But I didn't see anything, I couldn't see anything, I couldn't see his eyes, it was one of the most horrible feelings in life."

Basso's doubts were not cleared up quickly, either, as she spent the better part of an hour unsure if her partner was alive.

She also commented that the gravity of the situation was reiterated to her when the doctor told her to come right away, despite knowing she was caring for her newborn baby.

"Forty-five minutes went by until I knew he was alive, I didn't know if he was okay or would be okay, just that he was alive," said Basso.

"The doctor knew I had a baby, practically newborn, so when he said "yes, come", I knew it was serious.

"I was inundated with messages from friends and family in Mexico, I had to be strong and tell them everything would be okay."

After a long road to recovery, it seems that everything is going to be okay after all for Jimenez.

The Mexico international underwent surgery for a fractured skull in November 2020 and is now awaiting the all-clear to return to competitive action after returning to light training.

On May 18, Wolves and Jimenez will know if he can take the next step on his journey to playing again.
