Arsenal hero Alex Song has been laying down the foundations for his retirement by setting up a construction company and building flats in his Cameroon hometown of Douala.

The 33-year-old, who recently captained AS Arta Solar to the Djibouti national title, has been sharing details of his new venture on social media.

A clip of a building site was accompanied by an artists impression of the final result, which comes after Song launched the Canadian International School and College last October.

Having left Arsenal for Barcelona in 2012, he returned to the Premier League across two loans with West Ham before featuring for Rubin Kazan, Sion and now Arta Solar.

He captioned his recent upload: "Nokay 17 Residences, number two," alongside three hourglass emojis.

He said of his career last year when asked about leaving Arsenal: "I spent eight years at Arsenal, but it wasn't until my last four that I can say that I started earning a good living, because my salary increased considerably.

"I wasted a lot of money, I was going to expensive dinners, trips and holidays, during those eight years I couldn't even keep 100,000 pounds in my bank account.

"I thought I was a millionaire but that was not the reality, I was making 15,000 pounds per week."

Before adding: "I signed my first professional contract and I was so excited, I came to training and saw [Thierry] Henry arrive in his car, which was a gem, and I thought I needed the same car no matter the cost.

"Since I was a footballer, I could just go to the dealership, sign some papers and they would give you the car, that's how I ended up with the same car as Henry.

"After two months I understood that my money was going to run out and I asked for a Toyota instead."

Before adding of his move to the Camp Nou: "Barcelona were interested in signing me and their sporting director spoke to me.

"He told me that I wasn't going to play much football there. I told him that I didn't care, I knew that now I was really going to be a millionaire."

Song returned to train with the Gunners in January of 2018, but Wenger insisted that he would not be offered a new contract six years after his initial departure.
