Real Madrid have serious midfield concerns ahead of Liverpool clash

Real Madrid are sweating over the fitness of a pair of key midfielders, ahead of the club's upcoming meeting with Liverpool.

European showdown

The champions of Spain and England are of course set to face off in two weeks' time.

The clash will come as the first of two highly-anticipated Champions League Last-16 meetings.

La Liga heavyweights Real booked their spot in the competition's final 8 courtesy of a 4-1 aggregate victory over Serie A outfit Atalanta.

Liverpool, meanwhile, made short work of Bundesliga high-flyers RB Leizpig, with a pair of 2-0 victories.

Whilst neither side have looked anywhere close to their scintillating best over the course of the season to date, a hard-fought, quality-filled pair of outings are therefore nevertheless widely predicted over the weeks ahead.

Kroos & Valverde sidelined

As outlined above, however, the Champions League hopes of one of the two sides could well be set to take a serious hit, if the latest word doing the rounds in the European media is to be believed.

This comes amid claims that Real Madrid could be without not one, but two integral members of Zinedine Zidane's midfield for the visit of Liverpool to the Bernabeu.

First up is Toni Kroos.

German international Kroos was forced to depart Die Mannschaft's camp earlier today, after reporting for duty still suffering with an adductor problem picked up at the weekend.

Speaking in a press conference this afternoon, Joachim Low explained:

'Our technical department has examined and treated Toni intensely. He would have liked to stay in the group.'

Kroos, in turn, looks set for a spell on the sidelines, with his participation versus Liverpool up in the air as things stand.

And, joining the German on the treatment table in the Spanish capital is Federico Valverde.

Midfield all-rounder Valverde is said to have picked up a right leg issue of his own versus Celta Vigo on Saturday, and missed Los Blancos' latest training session as a result.

He too is therefore viewed as an injury doubt for the return of the Champions League, amid a potential midfield crisis for Zidane and co. over the weeks ahead.
