After his mysterious absence for the game was revealed before, Solskjaer simply had said it was because of "personal reasons."

The Norwegian boss then later confirmed the reason for his absence was a 'private matter.'

He said after United's poor 0-0 at Selhurst Park: "That’s a private matter. [His return] will take the time it takes."

De Gea was replaced between the sticks by Dean Henderson, who has played second fiddle to the veteran since his return from Sheffield United.

Henderson impressed in deputising for De Gea, making a key save to keep it goalless.

Solskjaer said: "That’s a Man Utd goalkeeper, sometimes you have to keep concentrating. He’s growing in that position. I thank him for one point and not zero."

The Norwegian had also earlier explained Anthony Martial's absence in south London.

He said that both De Gea and Martial are likely to miss out against Man City on Sunday.

He revealed: "Anthony got a knock in training on Monday on his knee so he's not ready for this.

"Hopefully [they're both back] for the weekend but we're not sure yet."

De Gea has been a mainstay in the United team ever since his 2011 switch from Atletico Madrid.

The shot-stopper has played 434 games for the Red Devils, winning one Premier League title, one FA Cup and one Europa League.

However, De Gea has come under fire in recent seasons after a number of high-profile errors.

And some United supporters believe the club would be better off making Henderson the new No1 due to his undoubted potential.
