Liverpool aren't interested in signing Wolves star Roman Saiss, it has been claimed. Jurgen Klopp is on the lookout for a new centre-back ahead of Monday's transfer deadline. And it seems as though the defender isn't an option, despite rumours starting to arise on social media.

Liverpool have been hit by a defensive crisis this season.

Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez are both out for the long term, while Fabinho and Joel Matip are also currently sidelined through injury.

As a result, Liverpool are scrambling to bring in a new centre-back with Klopp eager for his side to invest, knowing the Premier League title is at stake.

Yet The Athletic's David Ornstein has claimed the Reds have no interest in Saiss.

It's claimed there is ‘no truth' to the rumours over their interest - but he did admit Liverpool could strengthen before the deadline slams shut.

Liverpool won't be signing Wolves star Romain Saiss

Wolves and Liverpool sat down to do business for Diogo Jota back in the summer, with the winger being allowed to leave for Anfield.

But it seems as though they won't be striking another deal with each other, meaning Wolves can sleep easy knowing their prized defensive asset won't be on the move.

Meanwhile, Klopp is backing Jordan Henderson to step up in the absence of Van Dijk, Gomez, Fabinho and Matip.

"He did really well," Klopp said.

"We should not forget that Hendo is a No 8. That makes it even more special. He is an 8 transformed into a 6 transformed into a 4. He can play all these positions.

"That shows how football smart Hendo is. His physical skills are obvious, but he is smart because they are completely different positions."

He then added: "He played a good game against Tottenham and what makes it so exciting is that with his skills he can be very influential in our buildup as well, so that helps.

"He had a big hand in the first goal, nice little chip for Sadio [Mané] and then the square pass for Bobby."

Liverpool have also been linked with Arsenal star Shkodran Mustafi.

They think the Germany international ticks two boxes due to his affordability and Premier League experience.

Mustafi's contract at Arsenal expires at the end of the season and he's made just three top flight appearances for the Gunners this term.

And he could be on his way to Liverpool as a result.

But BBC Sport pundit Jermaine Jenas has questioned whether Mustafi would improve Liverpool - and is unsure whether the veteran is better than anything they've currently got.

"Let's just say that stopgap was Sokratis who came in, or Mustafi," said Jenas.

"A centre-half out there who's not getting a game.

"Are Liverpool fans going to be happy about it?

"Is Jurgen Klopp looking at that and saying, ‘I've got an actual centre-half and this is better than Fabinho and Matip, or Henderson and Fabinho?

"Is it better, that stopgap, than what you've already got?"
