Former Borussia Dortmund and PSG boss Tuchel was announced as Lampard's successor on Tuesday.

Thomas Tuchel has revealed he received a personal message from Frank Lampard after making his managerial debut with the club. The German oversaw Chelsea's 0-0 draw with Wolves at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

Tuchel replaced club legend Lampard who was axed on Monday. The Blues' all-time top scorer failed to get the best out of expensive summer recruits Kai Havertz and Timo Werner and prior to his sack the club sat just inside the top 10.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain boss was hired on Tuesday, took his first training session just hours later and was then in the Stamford Bridge dugout for his first Blues' match on Wednesday.

He could only guide Chelsea to a goalless draw with Wolves but Tuchel claimed he saw plenty of positives in what was a possession heavy display.

The German then gave his first press conference since being unveiled and was asked if he feared fan backlash after replacing a club legend.

"Fan backlash, I don't know, I hope not because that would be hard on the team," he responded. "Because we need our supporters like any team, and in a stadium like ours, like Chelsea, to have the fans so close and so close behind the team makes absolutely the difference.

"I can absolutely assume it's a big, big disappointment for the fan base to see that Frank was sacked.

"I can only repeat I have the biggest respect, I was a huge fan of Frank as a player, it was a huge joy to watch him play and to see how he played.

"He was one of the key figures to demonstrate in 90 minutes what Chelsea was about, intensity, devotion, winning mentality.

"And so I have the biggest respect for him personally and for his legacy."

Tuchel then revealed that Lampard had sent him a good luck message on Thursday morning and that he hopes the pair can meet in the near future.

"It just got bigger when I received a personal message today to wish me all the best and maybe to meet in the future when this is possible," added Tuchel.

"So honestly nothing has changed there.

"But in the last 72 hours the club made clear to me this is clearly not my fault and I cannot change the situation for him.

"The decision was made and I was handed the opportunity, but I totally mean what I say about Frank."

Lampard may have been disappointed by his sacking but he's shown class by wishing his successor good luck.
