Luka Modric to sign new one-year deal at Real Madrid

Luka Modric has reached an agreement in principle to extend his contract at Real Madrid beyond its current expiration of June 2021.

The Croatian international will renew his deal for another year - to June 30, 2022 - at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

When this extended contract expires at the end of next season, the midfielder will have completed a decade as a Real Madrid player after joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012.

During his eight and a half years in the Spanish capital, Modric has won four Champions League titles and two LaLiga Santander titles, among other trophies, as well as the Ballon d'Or at individual level.

Modric's performances in recent months, plus the leadership and experience he brings to the squad, have convinced the club to keep him around for a while longer.

Even in the last few weeks, the 35-year-old has put in exhibition after exhibition in the middle of the park for Los Blancos, reaffirming his worth to Zinedine Zidane.

MARCA had previously reported that Modric was willing to take a pay cut to stay at Real Madrid. His new deal will not be as well paid as his current one.

In the last few months, the Croatian has received a number of offers from elsewhere, including lucrative ones from Qatar, as well as MLS.

However, Modric's intention has always been to stay at Real Madrid. He's currently the oldest player in the first-team squad, yet his displays are amongst the best.

Furthermore, there is the value of playing football at the highest level in terms of being in shape for major international tournaments.

Euro 2020 was expected to be the veteran's final bow with Croatia but its postponement to 2021 and the close proximity with the World Cup in 2022 suggests a different outcome.
