Arsenal fans have slammed Jose Mourinho 's seemingly complimentary quotes on Mikel Arteta after Tottenham's 2-0 win over Arsenal on Sunday.

Heung-min Son and Harry Kane scored the two goals, with the hosts registering just three shots against the Gunners.

It was a typical Mourinho performance and it means Arsenal's dismal Premier League form continues. They sit in 15th.

Spurs, however, returned to the top of the table as their brilliant season continues.

Following the game Mourinho congratulated Arteta for the way Arsenal played in the contest.

Jose Mourinho led Tottenham to victory over Arsenal.

"I think it was a big game, not just because it was Tottenham-Arsenal," he told Sky Sports.

"I want to give good words, congratulations, to Mikel Arteta because he gave us a very difficult game. Tactically they are very good, very well organised.

"They gave us problems, problems that we managed to resolve. They have a good tactical courage and incredible spirit. They are a good team and he is a good coach.

"We were reading the game and making the changes to win it because 2-0 was in our hands against a great and difficult opponents but I believe my boys deserve it."

He added: "I can imagine tomorrow the headlines will be about them not being in a good position in the table but I believe with these players and Mikel Arsenal will be Arsenal again."

But Arsenal fans weren't having any of it, believing his praise to be patronsing.

"You think he really means it? It’s backhanded. He’s just taking the p***," tweeted one fan.

"If he was genuinely scared of us he would not say those things. So yes it’s patronising," posted another.

"He’s mugging us off," said one fan in response to his comments.

"He’s bantering us hard wow this club has hit a new low," another said.

"In Mourinho speak thats an insult," said an Arsenal fan.
