Havertz will play no part in the Blues’ Champions League tie against Rennes.

The German playmaker, who has been impressive in recent weeks, tested positive for coronavirus prior to the game, it has been announced.

He will now enter into a period of self-isolation before being re-tested.

There is no word on whether Havertz is showing any symptoms.

Havertz was initially left out of the Chelsea squad for Wednesday night's game, sparking fears he had suffered na injury.

However, just an hour before kick-off, the club's official twitter account announced he had contracted the virus.

The tweet wrote: "Frank Lampard has confirmed Kai Havertz has tested positive for Covid-19.

"As a consequence the player is now undergoing a period of self-isolation and is not involved in tonight’s Champions League game versus Rennes."

Speaking before the game, Lampard confirmed that no other players had tested positive, and that the entire squad was tested after Havertz was removed from the group.

He said: "Yeah it's significant because he's tested positive for Covid in the testing going into this game.

"He's come away from the squad, and he's in isolation as per doctor's orders.

"We move on, and he isolates for that period.

"We're obviously wishing him well at home.

"We're taking the precautions we usually take, everyone has been tested, the whole squad, since. They've all got negative tests.

"Hopefully it's a case of just taking Kai out, everyone else is negative, and we move on.

"I have to take a lot of things into consideration [with team selection], but with Kai I think his performances in the last two matches have been really good.

"Sometimes we're thriving for that consistency, but it's not a problem when you've got Jorginho coming in and N'Golo Kante adapting around it."

"A few games ago it was six games without a win! Nothing was going right, but that's football.

"We had to stay calm, I kept saying it in those tough times and I keep saying it.

"Clean sheets are great, they're good for confidence, but we're scoring goals [as well].

"Rennes are going to be a tough team to play against tonight, so we'll take it at face value tonight."
