Zidane's basic principle is failing him

Zinedine Zidane has a problem. The basic principle upon which his philosophy rests is failing him. The French coach's success in charge of Real Madrid has always been based on the collective effort of his players, on all his team playing a role in achieving their objectives. That kept his squad happy, it made them all feel useful and also gave them an advantage over their rivals, who in most cases do not boast such strength in depth.

This year, however, there are a good few members of his squad who have shown themselves to be not up to the demands of the competition. Many of them are not on form and, devoid of confidence, are not stepping up when given an opportunity from the start.

Zidane is only getting a positive response from 12 or 13 players in his squad right now. They were the ones who saved the team at the Camp Nou and did the same against Borussia Monchengladbach. In Germany, despite almost losing and snatching a point at the death, Los Blancos did display some positives, although they were let down by defensive errors.

Real Madrid have no margin for error in the Champions League and in LaLiga Santander they cannot allow themselves to squander the prize they earned at the Camp Nou. Not allowing those playing the most minutes enough rest would be a big mistake ahead of what will be another final for Real Madrid on November 3 against Inter. On the other hand, once again rotating the team too much is a risk the Frenchman will be wary of.

Eden Hazard's return from injury, who came on as a substitute against Borussia Monchengladbach, along with Dani Carvajal and Martin Odegaard, should help alleviate some of the pressure on Madrid's main men, but Los Blancos can forget about having a good year if seven or eight players aren't giving their best. Zidane knows all too well that titles are rarely won with a good team; they are won with a good squad.
