Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Edouard Mendy from Rennes.

Edouard Mendy has reportedly passed his medical in Berlin and is now a Chelsea player ahead of his £22million move from Rennes. The goalkeeper is set to join up with Frank Lampard's squad and is expected to overtake Kepa Arrizabalaga as Chelsea No 1.

The Spaniard endured another horror show on Sunday after he gifted Sadio Mane Liverpool's second goal in the 2-0 defeat.

Willy Caballero was between the sticks for Chelsea's League Cup thrashing of Barnsley at Stamford Bridge.

The club have been working hard to agree a deal with Rennes for Mendy and now they're finally closing in.

According to RMC Sport's Mohamed Bouhafsi, Mendy has now passed his Chelsea medical.

He tweeted: "Everything went well for Édouard #Mendy to the medical visit in Berlin. He signed his contract tonight with @ChelseaFC! He is a player of #Chelsea. Formalization tomorrow normally."

Mendy was forced to undergo the procedure in Germany due to current coronavirus travel restrictions.

Frank Lampard confirmed the move was close and he is hopeful his arrival could help bring the best out of Arrizabalaga.

"With Mendy coming in, it’s more competition so every reaction will have to be positive around that for Kepa and for Mendy to push to try and play in this team," he explained.

"We know the standards that are required of a goalkepeer in this team and we have to push for that.

"Petr was important in that because goalkeeper is a very particular position and he was the best in the world at that position for a long time so he's certainly had a big say in this situation from my point of view. I lean heavily on him when it comes to the goalkeepers day-to-day and planning for the future so he was very influential."

Chelsea had contemplated offloading Arrizabalaga at the end of last season but there was only interest in a loan.

Given the Blues paid a world-record fee of £71m to sign him two years ago, the club are not yet prepared to take a huge hit on him and remain optimisic he will come good.

He is said to be willing to fight for his place and is determined to prove his worth as he looks to establish himself as Spain's No 1 ahead of the European Championships.

Mendy kept 13 clean sheets as Rennes finished third in Ligue 1 last season, qualifying for the Champions League.

He conceded just 31 goals in 33 appearances and his performances are said to have impressed Chelsea's head of goalkeeping Christophe Lollichon.

As Lampard cited, Cech has close links to his former club Rennes and advised the Chelsea hierarchy to pursue a deal for the 28-year-old.
