Philippe Coutinho’s future remains up in the air as the Brazilian playmaker continues to be linked with a move to Arsenal, but it appears the Barcelona star won't be heading back to Bayern Munich

Philippe Coutinho’s immediate future has been confirmed - and it could be good news for Arsenal if they want to secure his signature.

Brazilian forward Coutinho spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich, helping them win the Champions League and Bundesliga.

A decision was yet to be made whether he would stay on at the Allianz Arena as rumours of a return to the Premier League continue to circulate.

But the 28-year-old will be heading back to Barcelona for the time being, according to the German side, meaning he may be available to sign this summer.

In a statement on their website, Bayern wrote: "After the treble-winning season, FC Bayern says 'Thank you' and 'Goodbye, take care' to Philippe Coutinho.

"The Brazil international, who joined Bayern on loan from Barcelona last August, returns to the Catalan side following the expiration of his season-long deal.

"Due to the suspension of matches resulting from the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent lockdown, the 28-year-old attacking midfielder’s contract at Bayern was extended to cover the end of the Champions League finals tournament in Lisbon."

Bayern CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge added: "We would like to thank Philippe Coutinho very much.

"With his creativity and excellent technique, he has invigorated our game during this treble-winning season."

While director Hasan Salihamidzic said: "Even though FC Bayern and Philippe Coutinho are parting ways after just one season, his commitment in Munich has made it clear what an outstanding player he is."

Coutinho’s agent Kia Joorabchian has admitted that a move back to England was an option this summer.

"Because the Champions League will run until August 23, it will be difficult for players like Coutinho to make any commitments or moves pre that date," Joorabchian previously said.

"Because he has the Champions League at the moment, they have to qualify past Chelsea. And then he has got to play Barcelona, believe it or not.

"For him to make a commitment pre having finished the Champions League.

"He loves playing in the Premier League, he is adored playing in the Premier League and that is one of his priorities. He is not at all against staying at Barcelona."
