Liverpool pre-season chaos as positive coronavirus test is recorded at Austria camp

Liverpool are holding a pre-season camp in Saalfelden in Salzburg, Austria ahead of the new campaign.

Liverpool have recorded a positive coronavirus test at their pre-season training camp in Austria. Liverpool had originally planned to hold their training camp in Evian as they have done in previous years, but a change in government guidelines on travel to France led to a switch to Austria.

They flew out to the Austria training base last weekend to being preparations for the new season.

But their training camp has been rocked by reports in Austria that a player has tested positive for coronavirus.

Players and staff have regularly been tested since arriving on Saturday but a recent test has since come back positive.

A spokesperson for the club remained coy on the positive test when pressed by The Mirror for confirmation.

But it is claimed Liverpool's plans for their time in Austria remained unaltered.

The report adds a follow up test will be conducted to rule out a false positive before any confirmation is made by the club.

The news comes just 11 days before Liverpool are set to take on Arsenal in the Community Shield on August 29.

Liverpool are also expected to play a number of warm-up matches during their time in Austria, with a potential friendly against Red Bull Salzburg lined up.

As per the Premier League's testing protocols, Liverpool players have been regularly checked and tested since the conclusion of the Premier League.

Players were given a short vacation period before the start of the pre-season training camp but were reminded to follow strict guidelines.

And Klopp reminded his players last month of the importance to be fully aware of the ever-changing situation.

"The boys can go on holiday, obviously, and we know from everybody where they will go, and it’s all OK – these countries are all completely fine," he said.

"But the situation can change, constantly, so now this is the responsibility of the boys. They must make sure they know when they have to leave the specific country.

"They have to follow the news and they have to react. It is not our job to say: ‘Maybe Spain closes the border again,’ or whatever. The boys are responsible for that, and they know that as well.

“We will do as much as we can to help but they need to be aware of the situation. None of us can go on holiday and do the things that maybe you could do in the past. We all have to still be disciplined, but I will say the boys were exceptional.

"Not only our players, but all the players in the Premier League. Not one single new case after the season restarted – that shows they are good boys, all of them, and I hope it stays like this and we will come back and train again."
