Liverpool fans in particular were in high spirits at seeing Manchester City being knocked out of the Champions League.

Liverpool fans are revelling in Manchester City's 3-1 defeat to Lyon in the Champions League quarter-finals. In a week which has seen giants such as Real Madrid, Juventus, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid all fall in the knockout stages, City soon found themselves as favourites to win their first ever Champions League.

After being outclassed by Liverpool in the Premier League campaign, triumph in the Champions League would have gone some way to making amends.

A routine win over Lyon was expected but they weren't at the races from the outset.

Maxwel Cornet soon gave Lyon a 1-0 lead with the French side taking that lead into the break.

City kept pushing for an equaliser and it soon came from the ever-reliable Kevin De Bruyne with 20 minutes remaining.

From there it looked as though City would go on to seal the win.

But Lyon went on to regain their lead in controversial circumstances when VAR deemed Moussa Dembele hadn't fouled Aymeric Laporte as he bore down on Ederson's goal before firing past the City goalkeeper.

Raheem Sterling had a golden chance to equalise minutes later. With an open goal at his mercy from six yards out, Sterling incredibly blasted the ball over the bar.

Within a minute of that miss, Lyon wrapped up the win after Dembele tapped in a rebound after Ederson spilled a tame shot from Houssem Aouar.

It means City are still chasing their first Champions League title and Liverpool fans were clearly delighted at the result.

One fan joked: "Always in Liverpool's shadow.

Another posted: "Man City are 3-1 down to Lyon and are on their way out of the Champions League!! What a week it is to be a Liverpool fan!

A third wrote: "Watch them spend 200 million pounds to catch Liverpool."

A fourth tweeted: "Only big teams win champions league Hahahahahahaha @ManCity all that money spent and you only bring home the league cup."

Another mockingly said: "Gotta love watching Man City in the champions league knockout stages."

Lyon will now go on to face Bayern Munich in the Champions League semi-finals after the German side thumped Barcelona 8-2 on Friday night.

Paris Saint-Germain take on RB Leipzig in the other semi-final.
