Manchester United have been given the green-light to sign Gabriel Magalhaes, after Lille secured the addition of his potential replacement. The Brazilian centre-back is the subject of a four-way transfer battle this summer following an impressive breakthrough season in Ligue 1.

United are set to rival Everton, Napoli and Paris Saint-Germain to sign the star this summer with Lille planning ahead for his departure.

Everton almost agreed a deal earlier this year and even welcomed the player to Merseyside for a tour of Finch Farm, after tabling a £27million offer in March.

The deal then stalled and was derailed by the coronavirus crisis, which gave the Toffees second thoughts but they have since reignited their interest.

Napoli then moved to the front of the queue and declared their desire to sign Gabriel during negotiations for striker Victor Osimhen.

The Italian club are finally set to confirm the signing of the Nigerian forward later today after reaching a £45million agreement.

Now Ed Woodward has been given the all-clear to wrap up a deal for Gabriel and £27million should be enough to get the deal done.

That's because his current club Lille have now confirmed the signing of Ajax central defender Sven Botman.

The Dutch youth international is expected to be fed straight into the first team set up.

Lille confirmed his arrival on Friday morning and are also set to sign Burak Yilmaz following his departure from Besiktas.

The club are set to use the money from the sale of Osimhen to pursue Rangers forward Alfredo Morelos with the board poised to oversee big changes at the Stade Pierre-Mauroy this summer.

United want to add another centre-back to their ranks to partner Harry Maguire.

While Victor Lindelof has been consistent this season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes there is an opportunity to strengthen at the heart of defence.

Gabriel could quench Man Utd's thirst for a left-footed centre-back

Chris Smalling and Phil Jones could leave in the coming months, while Marcos Rojo is set to seal a return to Argentina and Solskjaer therefore wants to bring in another left-footed centre-back.

He has already missed out on Nathan Ake, who is set to join Man City in a £41million move from Bournemouth.

Solskjaer joked with the Dutchman after the 5-2 win over Bournemouth that he should "keep going" because they wanted to sign a left-footed defender.

Aston Villa's Tyrone Mings has also been considering along with AC Milan's Alessio Romagnoli.
