Chelsea are planning a spending spree in the summer transfer window to give Frank Lampard's squad a boost.

Chelsea will turn their attention to Kai Havertz as soon as they have got a deal to sign Timo Werner across the finish line. The Blues are just putting the final touches to the agreement which will see RB Leipzig hitman Werner move to Stamford Bridge this summer.

They are in advanced discussions about the structure of the £53million deal, and travel restrictions are holding Werner up from making the trip to London for a medical.

And as soon as the final details are ironed out, Frank Lampard will be able to step up his interest in Bayer Leverkusen’s highly-rated German international midfield star Havertz.

Havertz, who celebrated his 21st birthday last week, is also a target for Liverpool, while Manchester United, Real Madrid and Barcelona are interested in signing him too.

Leverkusen are under no pressure to sell Havertz, who they rate at around £90m, while Chelsea don’t value him at anything near that at £75m.

But along with Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, he is a player that Lampard wants in his squad as he looks to build a side to challenge Manchester City and Liverpool for the Premier League title.

Havertz has been compared to former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, who similarly burst onto the scene at Leverkusen.

Ex-Liverpool midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes the youngster has the potential to thrive if he leaves the Bundesliga behind.

"The one player who stands out for me is Havertz," Hamann said. "He's an exceptional player who reminds me of a young Michael Ballack.

"He has that air of arrogance... in a nice way. He's just a natural. He's two-footed, he's tall and he's good in the air.

"He's very versatile, he can play across the front, he can play in any position. I think he is the best player we have got in Germany at the moment.

"There's talk about Werner maybe going to England and obviously he's a different player but I think Havertz is the one I would be looking at."

Ballack, though, would sooner see Havertz bide his time before quitting Leverkusen.

"Players with his quality are in demand everywhere," Ballack said. "But I think he’s in good hands in Leverkusen.

"The conditions there are perfect for young top players and their development. Bayer play attractive football and their training facilities are very good.

"Leverkusen also offer a cautious environment, and as a player you can make mistakes without being the focus of criticism. You should appreciate that.

"Of course a player like Kai Havertz has to play in the Champions League, so it would be important for Leverkusen to qualify for it."
