As his captain, Hugo Lloris knows exactly the impact Harry Kane will make on his club's season. But by the same token, it is same reason he is worried that in the opening game Spurs will be facing a Manchester United side featuring the return of Paul Pogba.

The United midfielder remains an enigma in English football and having watched the soap opera that has followed the 27-year-old's return to Old Trafford, many in Manchester question whether the motivation will bring to the season finale.

He picked up an ankle injury in the first few weeks of the season and suffered two abortive returns as question marks were raised about the severity of the problems.

Pogba last featured as a second-half substitute again Newcastle on Boxing Day with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side already 3-1 to the good.

But now they need somebody to drive them over the line into the top four to clinch a Champions League place and justify the faith shown in the manager.

Lloris wore the armband when Pogba's brilliance led France to World Cup success in Russia in 2018 and has no doubt about the impact his return will have.

“For Paul, it’s even a longer period than Harry without playing,” he said. “But I know Paul and as soon as he gets on the field, he just wants to win.

“He’s going to make everything possible to be at his best level to help Manchester United to get the top four.

“About the title, it’s almost done, but for the fourth place, or the fifth place, there will be a big battle and for the relegation, it will be an even bigger battle.

“There is a lot to win and to lose in these nine games. It’s the final sprint, you can win or lose everything.”

Which, by the same token, is why Tottenham need their talisman.

Statistically, Kane's presence is worth about 0.3 points per game to Spurs, only a small improvement on the 0.2 points per game benefit United see when Pogba is in action.

But the club appeared rudderless in the weeks leading into the lockdown when Kane was recovering from surgery on a tendon in his left hamstring.

Hence the relief he has been able to join them for the return to training.

“He is ready,” Lloris said. “In his mind, he is ready and that’s the most important thing.

“Everyone knows his targets, his ambition and his willingness to win.

“Harry is in a good place and just waiting to start the season again, like all of us.”

The pressure is arguably greater on Tottenham, currently four points adrift of United and with a manager who has even more to prove.

Zoom meetings, ill-advised training sessions in the park and more worthy community issues such as the Hotspur's Heroes campaign have all helped Jose Mourinho to get to know his players better, but now comes the acid test of whether it will make the difference.

“Covid came from nowhere,” Lloris said. “It is true that in this moment we were not at our best, but that belongs to the past.

“With the restrictions and the protocol we have to respect, it’s not been a long time that we are working as a team.

“But we are going in a good way. It is only a question of time, a question of confidence too.

“The only way to get better is to win games and keep winning.”
