Manchester United "is an option" for Kai Havertz but Chelsea are further along in their discussions for the Bayer Leverkusen star.

Manchester United "is an option" for Bayer Leverkusen sensation Kai Havertz. The Germany international has emerged as one of the hottest properties on the market ahead of this summer's transfer window.

Old Trafford bosses have set their sights on Havertz as an alternative to Borussia Dortmund winger Jadon Sancho, who remains Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's top transfer target.

Havertz - the youngest player to reach 50 and 100 appearances in the top tier of German football - has highlighted his talent by scoring five times in four appearances since the Bundesliga restarted last month.

The 20-year-old is valued at €100million (£90m) by Leverkusen, although Ed Woodward are co are set to splash the cash to strengthen Solskjaer's squad.

According to Christian Falk, Bild and SportBild's head of football, Havertz is open to joining the Reds Devils but Chelsea are leading the race.

"Manchester United is an option for Kai Havertz, because his management have been told about the big plans of the new team," Falk told Utd Report. "But, Chelsea are more concrete in the talks at the moment.

"Perhaps Chelsea are again faster than United, like in the case of Timo Werner."

Havertz has scored 11 goals and registered five assists this campaign.

He is also attracting interest from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich but previously hinted a move away from the Bundesliga could appeal.

"I think I've picked up enough international experience at Leverkusen," he told Marca in November.

"I know the rhythm of these international matches and I'm confident that I can go abroad at any moment and play at clubs outside of Germany.

"For the moment, I want to have a good season. Afterwards, we'll see."

It looks set to be a busy summer at Old Trafford whether Havertz joins or not. In addition to the seven-cap international and Sancho, Solskjaer also wants Aston Villa skipper Jack Grealish and Birmingham City wonderkid Jude Bellingham.

A new striker is not considered a priority after extending Odion Ighalo's loan deal until the end of January 2021.
